A hand that does not shake

I did not come to this practice through spectacle. I came to it through a taste for what is held: a gesture repeated until it is right, a progression measured rather than rushed, a body taken somewhere instead of shoved.

Precision before intensity

Intensity without precision is not severity, it is mess. I know where I strike and why. I know what a restraint does to circulation after twenty minutes. I know the difference between someone who is well and in pain, and someone who is not well and saying nothing — and they are not the same thing. That knowledge is what makes going far permissible.

The threshold rather than the limit

A limit is respected. A threshold is approached, stopped at, returned to. Most people who write to me do not yet know where theirs are; they only know what they have already done. My work begins exactly there.

Duration

An hour proves nothing. What interests me is what holds between sessions: a rule kept alone, a deprivation that lasts, an account rendered even on the day one would rather not. That is where something changes — not under the cane.

Refusal

I decline more applications than I accept, and rarely for the reasons people expect. I do not turn away beginners or the shy. I turn away those who negotiate before they have met, those who describe a scene and wait for it to be performed, and those who ask twice a question I have already answered.

What I take, I know how to give back. That is the only reason you can let me take it.
